Image/Text
My image challenges the judgments older generations often make about Gen Z and their perceived lack of seriousness. Many interpret Gen Z’s humor and constant phone use as signs of laziness or apathy, when in reality these behaviors can function as coping mechanisms for growing up in an economically and socially unstable environment.
This image targets older generations – Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers – as well as employers and educators who may associate phone use with disengagement. Rather than portraying scrolling as evidence of indifference, the composition reveals financial and emotional burdens that often remain invisible. By exposing what exists beyond the screen, the image encourages viewers to replace quick judgments with empathy and reconsider whether Gen Z’s behavior reflects personal character or the circumstances that have shaped their generation.
To communicate this message, I relied on visual contrast and juxtaposition. The central, young figure looking down at their phone represents the familiar stereotype of Gen Z as distracted and disengaged. I layered semi-transparent images of an empty wallet, overdue bills, and a calculator over the initial image to symbolize the hidden financial pressures that accompany everyday life. Lowering the opacity of these overlays allows them to appear as underlying realities rather than the viewer’s first impression, emphasizing that these struggles are often unseen. Positioning the subject in the center establishes a clear focal point, while the surrounding imagery creates visual tension that suggests the weight of responsibilities pressing in from all sides.
I also used a muted color palette by lowering the image’s brightness and saturation to reinforce the serious tone and contrast with the lighthearted stereotype often associated with Gen Z. The headline, “Behind every scroll” captures a familiar action, while the concluding phrase, “is a story you can’t see”, reframes that action by reminding viewers that appearances rarely reveal the full reality. Together, the text and imagery invite audiences to pause before making assumptions and recognize that what seems like mindless scrolling may coexist with stress, financial insecurity, and emotional burdens.

My goal with this Instagram reel is to challenge the stereotype that Generation Z lacks seriousness by showing the disconnect between how the generation is perceived and the realities many young adults face when entering the workforce. Rather than presenting statistics alone, I chose a social media reel because it is a format that Gen Z regularly consumes and because it mirrors the online spaces where these stereotypes are often created and reinforced.
The video opens with a compilation of real Gen Z social media reels that showcase Gen Z’s absurd and self-deprecating humor in the face of unfortunate circumstances, including financial hardship, extreme weather, and unexpected setbacks such as a broken car. I then transition to a reel that features common criticisms of Gen Z voiced by older generations, introducing the central issue of my project. As the clip reaches its final frame, I freeze the image, insert a record-scratch sound effect, and rapidly rewind the video before cutting to a black screen displaying the word “Lazy?” These editing choices are intended to interrupt viewers’ expectations and encourage them to question how quickly online humor can be misinterpreted as evidence of laziness or lack of responsibility. The video then transitions into another compilation of real Gen Z users sharing their experiences with repeated job rejections, financial insecurity, and the challenges of entering today's job market. These testimonials are paired with visuals of young adults submitting job applications, juggling multiple responsibilities, and struggling to secure employment. By juxtaposing these clips with the earlier examples of Gen Z humor, I aim to challenge the assumption that online humor and digital communication styles accurately reflect an individual's work ethic or commitment. I conclude this sequence by returning to the same creator featured at the beginning of the compilation who asks how young adults are expected to survive in a society where limited employment opportunities and generational biases make financial independence increasingly difficult to achieve. This moment serves as a call to action, encouraging employers and policymakers to recognize how institutional barriers and preconceived notions about Gen Z can contribute to these challenges. Finally, the video ends on a black screen displaying the statements, “Humor isn’t the opposite of responsibility” and “Don’t confuse the way a generation copes with the way it works”. These closing messages directly address the stereotypes introduced at the beginning of the project while emphasizing my central argument: Gen Z’s humor should be understood as a coping mechanism shaped by the social and economic conditions they inherited, rather than as evidence of apathy or a lack of professionalism.
I intentionally designed the reel to resemble the short-form videos commonly found on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts because these platforms are where conversations about Gen Z are most visible. The fast-paced editing, captions, and transitions reflect the conventions of social media while making the content accessible to both younger and older audiences. These rhetorical choices also support my purpose by meeting viewers in a familiar medium before encouraging them to reconsider their assumptions.
This project was informed by discussions of audience, purpose, and visual rhetoric from class. Rather than relying solely on written argument, I use the combination of video, text, audio, and authentic social media content to create an emotional appeal while also inviting viewers to critically examine the stereotypes they may hold. My argument is not that every employer unfairly judges Gen Z, but that perceptions of professionalism are often shaped by generational biases, and these assumptions can have real consequences for employment opportunities.
