Challenging the narrative
As a member of Gen Z, I have seen how social media, memes, and internet culture influence the way people my age communicate and express themselves. However, many adults from older generations often criticize Gen Z’s communication style and behavior as distracted, apathetic, and unserious. Many members of Gen Z believe these judgments are unfair and not reflective of our ambitions, values, and the challenges our generation has faced. This project aims to inform adults belonging to older generations how Gen Z’s dark humor and apathetic communication style, as well as perceived lack of seriousness, is a coping mechanism against the unstable environment in which we grew up. I aim to combat this misconception by explaining how the pandemic, rapid economic shifts, and constant social media engagement have dramatically changed standards of discipline and responsibility.
THE GEN Z EXPERIENCE
We are the generation that refuses to be labeled. Beyond the jokes, the trends, and the screens is a generation that creates, adapts, and pushes boundaries. We are not unserious—we are redefining what it means to be driven.
